A new case report on the integrated management of ulcerative colitis (UC) within the context of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)—Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis—has been published online in Nutrienti & Supplementi. The report was authored by Silvia Tedesco, Medical Director of the Department of Dietetics and Clinical Nutrition at the University Hospital of the Marche.
This case report describes the clinical course of a 28-year-old male patient with UC, who, at the time of admission, presented with 6–7 episodes of diarrhea per day, cramping abdominal pain, chronic fatigue, a high risk of malnutrition (MUST 4), and clinically significant sarcopenia. Anthropometric measurements showed a weight of 68.2 kg and a BMI of 20.14 kg/m².
The protocol called for the daily administration of LH VIOLA powder (240 g/day, approximately 1000 kcal and 54 g of protein), supplemented to the ongoing drug therapy. After 8 months of treatment, the patient gained 10.3 kg (+15.1%) in weight, with a BMI rising from 20.14 to 23.0 kg/m² (+14.2%), returning to the normal range—confirming the efficacy of LH VIOLA combating malnutrition in IBD.
The publication reinforces a key message: in ulcerative colitis, oral clinical nutrition with LH VIOLA serve as an integrated therapeutic intervention capable of improving both the patient’s nutritional status and quality of life.
