LIONHEALTH Società Benefit participated in the 47th ESPEN Congress on Clinical Nutrition & Metabolism with a poster presentation:
"Malnutrition healthcare costs in hospitalized IBD patients: a nationwide analysis of Italian Ministry of Health data (2015-2019)"
The research conducted in collaboration with the University of Rome Tor Vergata (CEIS-EEHTA), presented the first Italian data on the economic impact of malnutrition in hospitalized patients with MICI, carried out on data from the Ministry of Health.
Key message:
Malnourished MICI patients present compared with non-malnourished ones:
-2% higher hospital mortality rate (6.3% vs 4.5%);
-higher days of hospital stay (30 days vs 16 days);
-higher number of hospital readmissions (1.26 vs 0.71).
As a result, the management of malnourished patients incurs a 66 percent higher total cost to the NHS than that of non-malnourished patients (€10,857 vs €6,514).
