The central role of the hospital pharmacist
Bologna, February 4, 2026
A day-long discussion for hospital pharmacists to learn more about guidelines, reimbursement models and economic impact of Food for special medical purposes FSMPs) in the treatment of malnourished patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Rationale for the event
Chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects nearly 7 million people worldwide and about 250,000 in Italy, with an estimated incidence of around 10 to 15 new cases per 100,000 population per year.
Disease-related physiological changes and the chronic inflammatory state of the digestive system lead patients to develop malnutrition in 13-27% of cases and sarcopenia (loss of function and muscle mass) in more than 40%. This state has negative consequences both on patients' quality of life, such as reduced response rate to drug treatment, and on the National Health Service leading to increased hospitalizations and costs. In this context, the hospital pharmacist is confirmed as a key figure in the multidisciplinary team - alongside gastroenterologists, nutritionists and surgeons - capable of translating scientific recommendations for the management of malnutrition into concrete care pathways, ensuring prescriptive appropriateness and equitable access to nutritional treatments throughout the country.
