Rationale
In cancer patients, malnutrition is an unfavorable prognostic indicator and can affect quality of life, treatment adherence, and survival.
In recent years, awareness of this issue has increased not only at the institutional level but also among healthcare professionals. The Charter of Rights for Cancer Patients Regarding Appropriate and Timely Nutritional Support served as the basis for the Ministry of Health to publish the Guidelines on Nutritional Care Pathways for Cancer Patients. Furthermore, an increasing number of cancer centers are collaborating with clinical nutrition services and units. Clinical studies on nutritional support are on the rise and consistently report that timely and appropriate nutritional support plays a fundamental role in influencing clinical outcomes.
Despite this, there are still many challenges and opportunities for improvement regarding the resources allocated to clinical nutrition and nutritional care pathways throughout the country.
The Working Group, which includes AIOM and AIOM Nurses, SINPE, FAVO, SICO, ASAND, FNOPI, and AIRO, published the first AIOM Guidelines, “Nutritional Support for Patients Undergoing Active Therapy,” in January 2025 on the Italian National Institute of Health’s Guidelines System. These guidelines represent a crucial step toward ensuring that nutritional support becomes a systematic component of care pathways.
In July 2026, the NutriVita app—also developed by the Working Group—was released; it is intended as a tool to provide support and information to patients during their treatments.
